A little about me…
I am in my ninth year of teaching for Harrah Public Schools. For the first eight years, I taught first grade and was named District Teacher of the Year in my third year of teaching. While teaching first grade, I learned a lot about student needs, beginning readers, excitement for reading, the effect of labeling, activities surrounding reading material, and children’s creation of information. This year, I became the music teacher at my school. This position has showed me the joy of being able to build caring and connected relationships with many more children. It has provided me with the experience of teaching many different classes, levels, and behaviors. I will apply many of the these skills as a school librarian.
Being a first grade teacher was a huge inspiration to me in choosing to become a school librarian. The library and school librarian have the potential to support the most effective types of learning for students and to support all school staff in an optimal learning environment. I will encourage practices that support intrinsic motivation to read for pleasure, the creative creation of knowledge, excitement for seeking information, and the desire to make a difference in the world. Being a librarian provides the opportunity to inspire children and staff in many ways, and that is why I began and completed my journey through the University of Oklahoma’s Master of Library and Information Studies program.
I hope that this online portfolio demonstrates the passion and commitment that I applied as a student within the program and will apply as a school librarian!
